There's a post here on this very blog about a seamless and worry free upgrade. And we do WP upgrades all the time for $35. Contact us if you want help. But I urge you to upgrade since you are running an insecure version of WP that is at immediate risk of being hacked. Whoever told you that was full of prunes. I'm using am older version of WP (2.3.3) and was told by my Blogger Company it is better not to upgrade to the latest version of WP. Now I am confused for sure because I want to add video capabilities to my Blog; but thanks to your post I know I can at least optimize my Blog Site with the 5 suggested Plugins.
